Monsanto Response to Food Inc.
Food Inc. was a very influential movie on the food industry in general. One part of the movie I found sort of disturbing was towards the end when the movie started talking about the Monsanto Industry. The most disturbing detail of the Monsanto bit was how Food Inc. implies how Moe Parr, a small town farmer in Indiana, cleans and saves his own seed. The Monsanto Industry sued Moe Parr for using and cleaning their own patented seed. As I took it, Food Inc. made it seem that some seed from someone else's field blew into Mr. Parr's field and grew there. Mr. Parr then cleaned and saved this seed and Monsanto found out about it. They sued Mr. Parr because he had some of their seed in his own. On Monsanto's website, this is asked and they replied by saying how Moe Parr is not a farmer, he is just a person that has cleaned seed for decades and started just cleaning their patented seed. Another part of this Monsanto portion of the movie shows how, now, Monsanto's seed accounts for nearly 90 percent of all of the seed in the nation. Soon, all of the soybean and wheat seed will be a Monsanto product. There will be no more cleaning and saving your own seed every year. In the upcoming years, no matter what a farmer would want, he or she will have no choice but to buy Monsanto seed. This could become a huge problem. There would be no normal seed left in America and Monsanto would have a monopoly on all of the soybean and wheat seed in the country.
Another part of Food Inc. shows how many leaders of the Monsanto Industry are also part of a few government institutions. I believe the movie stated that 3 to 4 Monsanto employees worked in the FDA and another government association. Monsanto claims how at least one of these is false and that one of their employees stopped working at Monsanto before moving into government. This still doesn't show that this employee would not be biased towards anything to have to do with the Monsanto company. It doesn't say anything about any other people who worked for Monsanto company and later for the government. I find this a little bit odd and obviously anything doing with the Monsanto company, they would vote for Monsanto to help the Monsanto company gain more power.
